On Wednesday, the State Administration of Science, Technology and Industry for National Defence announced that Chang'e-2, which was launched in October 2010, had successfully completed its extended mission by reaching an orbit 1.7 million km away from Earth. According to the report, the probe is currently orbiting the sun at a distance of nearly 2 million km from Earth, and data received shows it is in good condition. However, experts say the probe has exhausted its fuel supply and will likely crash to Earth in a few months' time. The probe was originally designed to travel around the moon for six months. Upon completing its mission, it was sent into outer space in June last year to conduct further exploratory tests, making China the third country after the US and Russia to have examined an asteroid from a close distance. Chang'e-2 has helped Chinese scientists capture full coverage of the moon's surface with a resolution of 7 meters, more detailed than the 120-meter resolution images taken by Chang'e-1, the first lunar probe.
